About The Position

The Probation and Parole Officer position involves supervising and investigating adult criminal offenders through the provision of probation, parole, and pardon services. This role is essential in ensuring compliance with legal requirements and supporting offenders in their rehabilitation process. The position may be filled at various levels (1, 2, or 3) based on the candidate's experience, and it requires a commitment to following policies and procedures while focusing on the needs of the community and the individuals served.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree or six years of full-time work experience in any field as a substitute.
  • Possession of a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Willingness and ability to handle and carry firearms.
  • Willingness and ability to complete Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy and attain POST certification.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise felons and misdemeanants through counseling and referrals to community resources.
  • Enforce conditions of supervision and perform all aspects of the violation process under close supervision.
  • Conduct criminal justice social background investigations of offenders and make recommendations for decision makers in the criminal justice system.
  • Conduct arrests, transport violators, prepare reports to courts and parole board, and attend and participate in hearings.
  • Investigate and determine amounts of victims' restitution, set payment schedules, and collect and disburse restitution and supervision fees.
  • Place offenders in appropriate drug treatment, vocational rehabilitation, or mental health programs and assist them in obtaining emergency financial aid.
  • Administer drug tests by obtaining urine samples and evaluating results.
  • Assist in conducting jail operation audits on facilities housing DPSC inmates.
  • Supervise and direct discretionary community service work performed by parolees.
  • Conduct disciplinary hearings for adult inmates in Community Rehabilitation Centers.
