About the position

The Probation and Parole Officer position is responsible for supervising adult felons in the community, focusing on reducing recidivism through assessment, treatment referral, and ongoing monitoring of offender behavior. The role involves managing a caseload, conducting investigations, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with conditions set by the releasing authority. Officers work to assist offenders in reintegrating into society by providing support and resources to promote pro-social behavior and community ties.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of adult felons using motivational interviewing skills to assess criminogenic risk/need.
  • Refer offenders to appropriate treatment and programs targeting their primary criminogenic needs.
  • Monitor offender activities to ensure adherence to transition plans and conditions set by the releasing authority.
  • Assist offenders in obtaining and maintaining employment.
  • Engage ongoing support for offenders by helping them identify pro-social networks and activities.
  • Conduct various investigations including pre-sentence, interstate, pre-pardon, and pre-parole.
  • Prepare reports on offender activities and provide recommendations to the releasing authority.
  • Maintain documentation related to the management of offender caseloads.
  • Monitor payment of financial obligations ordered by the releasing authority and document payments.
  • Assist in security operations during prison disturbances and transport offenders when necessary.
  • Conduct periodic screenings for drug and alcohol use by offenders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with at least 24 semester hours in psychology, sociology, social work, criminology, education, criminal justice administration, penology, or police science.
  • For Level II: Two years of correctional experience in social casework involving classification, assessment, or field supervision of probationers and parolees, or a master's degree in the relevant fields plus one year of experience.
  • For Level III: Four years of correctional experience in social casework involving classification, assessment, or field supervision of probationers and parolees, or a master's degree in the relevant fields plus one year of experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in evidence-based practices in offender supervision.
  • Knowledge of community resources and transitional services.
  • Experience in report writing and basic investigation techniques.
