About the position

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Senior Process Automation Engineer at our Cleveland, OH operation. This position is responsible for providing Level 2 Supervisory Automation support to increase efficiency, quality, and productivity within the steel manufacturing process. The ideal candidate will have prior steel industry experience, be self-motivated, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex operations. As a Senior Process Automation Engineer, you will serve as a cross-functional team leader on special projects, assignments, or initiatives. You will monitor supervisory computer systems in real-time, ensuring the maintenance of computer hardware and software, as well as the design and installation of new computer control systems and modernization of existing systems. Your role will involve researching, analyzing, designing, and maintaining manufacturing control systems aimed at continuous improvement of the manufacturing process. You will be responsible for preparing and presenting interpretations of findings, providing relevant conclusions and recommendations. Additionally, you will develop custom software, programming language code, and database configurations for tracking, communications modeling, as well as Human Machine Interface (HMI), networking, and video systems. Your expertise will also extend to developing, implementing, and maintaining software related to mill processes, such as product tracking, product dimensioning, data reporting, and analysis. In this role, you will identify, develop, and evaluate production projects by applying advanced engineering techniques to solve complex problems and provide recommendations to management. You will also manage positive working relationships with union workers, contractors, leadership, and plan operation teams, ensuring effective collaboration across various departments. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a cross-functional team leader on special projects, assignments, or initiatives.
  • Monitor supervisory computer systems in real-time of steel mill processes including maintenance of computer hardware and software, design and installation of new computer control systems, and modernization of existing systems.
  • Research, analyze, design, and maintain manufacturing control systems for continuous improvement to the manufacturing process.
  • Prepare and present interpretation of findings and provide relevant conclusions and recommendations.
  • Develop custom software, programming language code, and database configuration for tracking, communications modelling as well as Human Machine Interface (HMI), networking, video systems, etc.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain other software relative to mill processes such as product tracking, product dimensioning, data reporting, and analysis.
  • Identify, develop, evaluate production projects by applying advanced engineering techniques to solve complex problems and provide recommendations to management.
  • Manage positive working relationships with union workers, contractors, leadership, and plan operation teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering/computer related field, such as Electrical or Computer Engineering from an accredited school.
  • Two (2) years of demonstrated experience in development of software, computer programming, as well as system maintenance roles of a technical team in a business or industrial environment.
  • Proven skill in programming languages such as C, C#, Fortran, VB.NET, Java/JavaScript, C++, Python, Microsoft SQL, Windows scripting.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools and Applications such as Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, OneDrive, Forms, PowerBI, etc.
  • Basic understanding of computer networking and routing.
  • Demonstrated ability to create, modify, and troubleshoot complex programming logic.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working successfully in a self-directed team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three (3) or more years of experience and bachelor's degree in engineering/computer.
  • Experience in programming in a variety of higher-level languages, including C, .NET, FORTRAN, Java, or C++, etc.
  • Experience with DBMS as a database administrator and/or SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • Experience with process modeling and familiarity with interfacing to direct control systems such as PLC, DCS, and hybrid systems is a plus.
  • Experience with Windows and/or VMS server operating systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of control theory.
  • Disciplined project management skills.
