About the position

The Process Control Engineer position is a direct-hire opportunity located at a heavy industrial manufacturing plant in Chillicothe, Ohio. This role is critical in developing and maintaining control systems, specifically Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), for real-time, on-line control of production processes. The engineer will collaborate closely with various departments including operations, maintenance, technical services, environmental, engineering, and IT to enhance manufacturing efficiencies and quality. The primary goal is to apply control system knowledge to minimize variation and reduce costs in production processes. In this role, the Process Control Engineer will take on significant responsibilities, including safety leadership and compliance for all employees. The engineer will initiate and enforce company systems, policies, and procedures, ensuring accountability among team members and all facility personnel. Maintaining control systems is a key duty, which involves providing necessary configuration changes, routine system backups, and maintaining essential documentation and drawings. The engineer will also work closely with operations, maintenance, and technical service teams to optimize control systems, which includes variability reduction, control loop performance monitoring, and alarm management. Troubleshooting and providing technical support are essential functions of this position. Additionally, the engineer will support engineering efforts in the design, configuration, checkout, training, and startup of capital projects, and will collaborate with facility and contract technicians to accomplish physical tasks. Availability during off-hours and weekend on-call rotations is required, and the engineer is expected to initiate and complete tasks with minimal direct supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain control systems (DCS and PLC) for real-time, on-line control of production processes.
  • Ensure safety leadership and compliance for employees.
  • Initiate and enforce all company systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Hold self, team members, and all facility personnel accountable for their duties, behaviors, and actions.
  • Maintain control systems by providing required configuration changes and routine system backups, and by maintaining necessary documentation and drawings.
  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Technical Service teams to provide control system optimization, troubleshooting, and technical support.
  • Support Engineering in the design, configuration, checkout, training, and startup of capital projects.
  • Collaborate with facility and contract Technicians to accomplish physical tasks.
  • Be available during off-hour and weekend on-call rotations.
  • Initiate and complete tasks with minimal direct supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Paper Science, or an Associate's Degree in Automation Technology or related field with equivalent experience.
  • Experience implementing controls in a Bailey Controls Infi-90 System or equivalent control system in a pulp and paper operation is desired.
  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers such as Allen-Bradley PLC-3, PLC-5, and ControlLogix is desired.
  • Process experience in power and steam generation (boilers, turbines, etc.) is desired.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to work collaboratively at all levels within a manufacturing organization.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly express complex issues.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to absorb new technology and processes quickly.
  • Strong personal computer skills.
  • Positive attitude, motivated, adaptable, and focused.
