About the position

The Process Control Engineer is responsible for overseeing all control systems within the plant, including programmable controllers, data acquisition systems, operator interfaces, and communications networks. This role focuses on monitoring and optimizing control system performance to ensure process plant stability, providing technical support and training to staff, and implementing systems for version control and data backup. The engineer will also design and implement new systems for plant expansion and develop operational SOPs for critical PLC functions.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all control systems including programmable controllers, data acquisition systems, operator interfaces and communications networks.
  • Monitoring and optimization of control system performance to achieve optimum process plant stability.
  • Aiding electrical and instrumentation staff with fault finding of electrical, control system and instrumentation faults.
  • Providing mentoring and training to process plant technical staff.
  • Implementation of systems for version control, code and data backup and system recovery.
  • Assist technical staff with development of control system strategies for plant improvement projects.
  • Design and implement new systems for plant expansion projects.
  • Development of operational SOPs for critical PLC functions.
  • Modify and update HMI's.
  • Optimize existing control strategies - ACE and Virtual instruments.
  • Advance plant Automation and control to minimize operator interaction.
  • Develop Training program for Control Room Operators and be responsible for signing them off as competent.
  • Oversee new operators in the control room.
  • Develop HMI display pages and make changes to PLC as required.
  • Responsible for Bypass Report and backup procedures for PLC and other associated PLC around site.
  • Selection of Version control software and update.
  • Keep the network drawings up to date to reflect system changes.
  • Work on alarm management and demonstrate monthly improvement on number of alarms.
  • Review and keep up with development in technology around PLC and network communication.
  • Complete training in PLC and network configuration, with remuneration review after successful outcomes.
  • Become familiar with VSD onsite and ensure all parameters are backed up.
  • Develop tools to determine how many loops are running in automatic, manual and cascade.
  • Develop the short interval restriction report, potentially outsourcing to get into Pi.
  • Review infrastructure with IT and ensure a program is in place to replace equipment in budget.
  • Start to develop some instrumentation skills and work with electricians to develop their PLC skills.

Requirements

  • Relevant technical degree or diploma.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in process control systems.
  • Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Proficient with Wonderware InTouch SCADA system.
  • Proficient with Schneider Quantum & M580 PLCs and Unity Pro software.
  • Understanding of Rockwell RS Logix and RTView Studio packages.
  • Understanding of OSISoft PI software.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communications and networking methods.
