About the position

The Process Development Scientist role at Vertex Pharmaceuticals involves leading the development of cell therapy processes, applying scientific and engineering principles to process development, characterization, and troubleshooting. The position requires collaboration with team members and performing lab work to ensure continuity of studies, particularly over weekends. The role emphasizes effective teamwork, data analysis, and documentation of experimental procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of a cell therapy process and apply scientific and engineering principles to process development, characterization, and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with PD teammates and perform lab work to ensure continuity of studies over weekends.
  • Effectively collaborate with a fully integrated team to facilitate project success and participate in scientific discussions.
  • Perform 2D and 3D cell culture operations, leveraging single-use technology and cell separation equipment.
  • Apply statistical principles to experimental design and data analysis.
  • Document experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines using batch records or Benchling ELN while ensuring data integrity.
  • Prepare, analyze, interpret, and present data generated from lab experiments/studies, and write technical reports.
  • Support departmental teams, deliverables, and participate in discussions on issue resolution.
  • Provide general laboratory support, including equipment maintenance and material ordering.

Requirements

  • PhD in Life Sciences, Bioengineering, Biochemical/Biomedical Engineering or related discipline with 0-3 years of relevant industrial work experience, or a Master's degree in relevant field with at least 3 years of relevant industry experience, or a Bachelor's degree in relevant field with at least 6 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Process development experience in a bio-pharmaceutical setting working with interdisciplinary and cross-cultural teams.
  • Experience with pluripotent stem cell 2D and 3D cell culture and directed differentiation, especially with associated equipment such as 3D bioreactors operation.
  • Knowledge of quality by design principles and experience with design of experiments (DOE) and data analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks while meeting timelines and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain detailed and accurate records and notes.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with Benchling ELN preferred.
