About the position

The Process Engineer for Battery Safety, Tools & Processes will be a key member of the Tooling Process and Training Engineering team at Tesla. This role focuses on the design, documentation, integration, and training of custom service tooling hardware and procedures to support the development and maintenance of Tesla's energy storage solutions. The individual will act as an in-house expert on battery and high voltage systems, influencing procedure development, tool design, and training initiatives to enhance safety and efficiency in the evolving energy industry.

Responsibilities

  • Own and publish arc fault calculations to define PPE for every battery and high voltage facing procedure
  • Review and approve all battery/high-voltage procedures around mobilization, disassembly, and general serviceman interfacing
  • Collaborate with product abuse and reliability teams to drive service interfacing dos and don'ts
  • Lead curriculum and content development for training programs for new field servicemen to understand risks and mitigations around battery technologies
  • Ensure new tool design and process is in coordination with EHS, local regulation, and battery abuse teams to develop standards
  • Approve decision trees that define actions for batteries after fault modes in agreement with HAZMAT and Environmental health/safety ordinances

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Electronics Technology, Battery Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years experience leading a team in an undefined technical environment with fault risks
  • 5+ years experience in electronic/mechanical system troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • 5+ years experience with BESS, Battery Energy Storage systems
  • 5+ years experience in implementing preventative technical measures through engineering fundamentals
  • 5+ years experience calculating and working with arc flash and shock hazard mitigations
  • 2+ years experience leading and designing training curriculum and class sessions
  • 2+ years experience dealing with HAZMAT and EHS teams
  • Expertise in instrumentation (data loggers, meggers, meters, thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, pressure gauges, etc.)
