About the position

Kelly Engineering is seeking a Chemical Process Engineer to join our client's team in Kingsport, Tennessee. This full-time, on-site position involves working closely with operators in the control room, conducting various engineering studies and evaluations, designing process equipment, and implementing process improvements. The role encompasses assignments related to plant, processing, and production operations, making it essential for candidates to have a solid understanding of chemical engineering principles and practices. The Chemical Process Engineer will be responsible for ensuring adherence to Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) and Process Safety Management (PSM) standards and guidelines. This includes participating in Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPS), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and incident investigations. The engineer will suggest and implement technical improvements or new technologies to enhance plant competitiveness, provide process engineering assistance to troubleshoot major operational problems, and maximize asset utilization. Additionally, the role requires identifying ways to increase product yields, reduce variable costs, and develop the associated process scope to achieve expected results. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing capital projects, developing process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, writing equipment and control specifications, and performing material and energy balances. The engineer will also be involved in process commissioning and supporting startup activities during capital project execution. Ensuring the successful transfer of processes and new products from Research and Development (R&D) to production is a critical aspect of this role, along with documenting scale-up activities in written reports. The engineer will recommend, design, conduct, and evaluate process testing to quantify unit performance for cost reduction and execute studies and projects in the domain of process improvement and development. Providing technical training for employees and developing written documentation about production processes and facilities are also part of the job responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the application and adherence of HSE and PSM standards and guidelines
  • Participate in HAZOPS, LOPA, and incident investigation
  • Suggest and implement technical improvement or new technology to improve the plant competitiveness
  • Provide process engineering assistance to troubleshoot major operational problems and maximize asset utilization
  • Identify ways to increase product yields, reduce variable costs, and develop the associated process scope to achieve the expected results
  • Provide process assistance to the units as needed
  • Design and implement capital projects: design process system, develop process flow diagram, develop piping and instrumentation diagram, write equipment and control specifications, perform material and energy balances
  • Perform process commissioning and support start up activities during capital project execution
  • Ensure the transfer of processes and new products from R&D to Production
  • Follow up scale-up activities and document them in written reports
  • Study, develop, and implement the new processes required for the production of new products
  • Recommend, design, conduct, and evaluate process testing for the purpose of quantifying unit performance for cost reduction
  • Execute and/or follow up studies and projects in the domain of process improvement and/or development
  • Provide technical training for employees as identified
  • Develop written documentation about the production processes and facility and keep them up to date
  • Perform auxiliary duties as assigned
  • Support the Operations manager in coaching the operational teams regarding process safety
  • Contribute to the industrial network in the Global Business Unit to exchange best practices
  • Contribute to the alert duty group being the contact for operational teams outside office hours
  • Wear appropriate PPE

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering
  • 1-3 years of experience in chemical process engineering
  • Skilled in Analysis, Design Skills, Presenting Technical Information, Equipment Maintenance, Conceptual Skills, Quality Focus, General Consulting Skills, Control Engineering, Production Planning
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screen
