About the position

General Atomics (GA), a leader in high-technology systems development, is seeking a Mechanical Process Engineer to join its Inertial Fusion Technology (IFT) division in Torrey Pines, CA. This division specializes in designing, manufacturing, and characterizing precision components that support National Laboratories and fusion science technologies. The components produced are often millimeter in scale with micron-sized features and tolerances, requiring the use of highly specialized and precise equipment. In this role, the Mechanical Process Engineer will support the engineering staff in analyzing, investigating, and resolving engineering problems of moderate scope and complexity. The position operates under general supervision, with regular reviews of work to ensure soundness of technical judgment and overall adequacy. The engineer will document findings, implement solutions, and communicate results to both engineering and management staff. While the primary contacts will be internal, there may be occasional interactions with other organizations or customers regarding routine matters. The engineer may also provide direction to design or technician/production staff as needed. The responsibilities include applying technical knowledge to resolve Mechanical/Process Engineering problems, performing functional testing and troubleshooting of equipment and systems, obtaining and analyzing test data, and developing presentations to report findings during Management Reviews. The engineer will ensure compliance with government and industry standards, including ISO9001 and NAP401 Standards, while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information. Safety is paramount, and the engineer is expected to adhere to established operating procedures and practices. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the organization as a technical expert in Mechanical Processes Engineering.
  • Apply technical knowledge to analyze, investigate and resolve assigned Mechanical/Process Engineering problems.
  • Perform functional testing and troubleshooting of equipment and systems in assigned area(s) by utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.
  • Obtain and analyze test data.
  • Develop presentations and report findings and implemented solutions in Management Reviews.
  • Provide direction to design and/or production staff as needed.
  • Ensure technical competency and contractual compliance with government and industry standards including ISO9001 & NAP401 Standards.
  • Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Observe all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and two or more years of engineering experience with a bachelor's degree.
  • Must have a general understanding of Mechanical and Process Engineering concepts, principles, and theory with technical experience demonstrating the application of those concepts while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment and organize work assignments to meet established timetables.
  • Good communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work extended hours as required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Class Q clearance.
