About the position

The Process Engineer for the Paint team at Gigafactory Texas will be responsible for supporting Model Y production by ensuring effective paint application processes. This role involves troubleshooting, improving safety and quality, and driving cost reductions while maintaining high standards of paint quality. The engineer will act as a technical expert, collaborating with various teams to enhance production efficiency and resolve quality concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Understand assigned process, associated equipment and automation, and troubleshoot when required by effectively handling containment situations
  • Ensure assigned process is capable of meeting specified requirements and drive improvement projects for Safety, Quality, Throughput, and Cost
  • Ensure critical process parameters are properly documented and tracked using Statistical Process Control (SPC) methodologies
  • Ensure appropriate TPM systems are in place and appropriate actions taken to maintain the facility in good operating condition
  • Establish, maintain, and ensure compliance to the process control plan per PFMEA
  • Interact with the Quality team to correct, contain, and resolve product quality concerns
  • Support new model/product/material introductions in coordination with Design Engineering, New Product Introduction team, Quality, and other teams as needed
  • Become subject matter expert on paint key process input variables such as paint incoming quality, robot paint application parameters, mix room operations and others
  • Coordinate actively with paint suppliers, using their expertise to improve and manage process quality
  • Support and guide Technicians in day-to-day operations of their process

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing/ Industrial, Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with Paint application, both manual and robotic
  • Experience with surface preparation for paint application, color reading, paint characterization and performance tests
  • Experience with interaction of paint with other processes in auto manufacturing
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to identify and drive non-standard solutions to solve manufacturing constraints
  • Comfortable providing clear and focused technical guidance to outside Engineering resources, as well as the Production teams
  • Ability to work in rapidly changing environment with minimal guidance
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with internal groups and outside vendors
  • Expert level in Microsoft Office suite of programs
