About the position

Occidental Chemical Corporation (OxyChem) is seeking an experienced and self-motivated Process Engineer for the Silicate Division at our Mobile, AL plant. OxyChem is a leading North American manufacturer of essential chemical products, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resins, chlorine, and caustic soda. As a Process Engineer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and communicating divisional process risk procedures, implementing these procedures effectively, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. In this role, you will be directly responsible for designing and conducting Process Engineering Projects and Studies, troubleshooting process and product problems across the division, and recommending design improvements to plant staff. You will coordinate capital project work and create and administer Process Risk policies and practices. As a Process Hazard Review Leader, you will lead HAZOP, LOPA, What if/Checklist, and FMEA sessions, develop training materials, and serve as a trainer and master trainer for the team. Additionally, you will assist plants in resolving customer quality problems and updating Operating Manuals and Operator Training Programs as needed. You will interface with the Corporate Process Risk Group, Technical Director, and Silicate plants on Process Risk-related issues, maintaining divisional procedures and assisting with implementation plans. Periodic visits to Silicate plants will be required to provide support for Process and Process Safety needs, conduct PHA revalidations, and manage Incident Investigations. Your role will also involve providing technical support during plant audits and fulfilling safety spreadsheet expectations, including job observations and planned inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and communicate divisional process risk procedures for the Silicate Division.
  • Design and conduct Process Engineering Projects/Studies.
  • Troubleshoot process/product problems division-wide and recommend design improvements to plant staff.
  • Coordinate appropriate capital project work.
  • Create and administer Process Risk policies and practices.
  • Lead Process Hazard Reviews (HAZOP, LOPA, What if/Checklist, and FMEA).
  • Develop training materials and serve as a trainer and master trainer.
  • Assist plants in resolving customer quality problems as required.
  • Assist silicate plants with Operating Manual Updates and Operator Training Programs as needed.
  • Interface with the Corporate Process Risk Group, Technical Director, and Silicate plants on Process Risk related issues.
  • Conduct PHA revalidations for the Silicate Division and Incident Investigations as needed.
  • Provide technical support in plant audits (customer, corporate, regulatory, etc.).
  • Fulfill safety spreadsheet expectations (job observations, planned inspections, etc.).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering or a closely related engineering field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' process & equipment related experience.
  • 2 years of experience with P&ID's.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to resolve technical problems and work as part of a team.
  • Strong leadership, communications, analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies on weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and good working knowledge of SAP.
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs., climb ladders and stairs, and perform walking, bending, and stooping.
