About the position

Birck Engineering is seeking a motivated Process Engineer with experience in the process industries, such as Oil & Gas, Chemical, and Refining. The role requires a proactive and ambitious engineer with strong foundational engineering skills and the capacity to learn new skills and solve problems. This process engineer will be responsible for performing engineering design calculations and preparing engineering design documentation for client projects which will be constructed from the engineering package. In addition, the role will require frequent collaboration with the other engineering and design disciplines to ensure a high quality, comprehensive design is prepared. There will be opportunities to grow and learn beyond the traditional process engineering role and responsibilities, including working across disciplines, performing project engineering tasks, and providing supplemental project management support.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and managing P&ID sets
  • Carry out technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed standards (API, ASME, etc)
  • Support process hazard analysis (PHA) and/or layers of protection analysis (LOPA) during design development
  • Develop process simulations (VMG, HYSYS, Flarenet, Promax) to evaluate or validate process design
  • Performing sizing calculations for relief valves, control valves, separators, compressors, and other equipment that projects may need
  • Conduct and participate in field walkdowns for design verification
  • Demonstrate a safety mindset both on and off the job
  • Generate and confirming process design basis
  • Work with clients, contractors, project managers and engineering disciplines to ensure the project execution plan is effective, comprehensive, reasonable and obtainable
  • Potential to lead and managing small projects
  • Problem-solving skills to be able to resolve simple problems quickly and effectively
  • Basic self-direction and responsibility for own tasks, deliverables, and timelines
  • Basic leadership skills and some general experience leading work groups or task forces in specific projects
  • Helping to prepare project funding documents such as cost estimates, equipment bid summaries and authorization requests
  • Potential for travel to project sites

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering is required
  • At least 5 years of design/consulting experience in the oil and gas or chemical industry
  • The ability to interpret and resolve concerns generated as part of PHA, Incident Investigation, HAZOP, and/or Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) activities
  • Basic knowledge of gas codes and regulations, including 49 CFR Part 192 193, 195, B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, B31.12, API 520 Pt. 1 & 2, API 521 and ASME BPVC Section VII
  • Experience in engineering/specification of process equipment
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
