About the position

As the Total Process Safety Engineer at ADM's Mankato, MN manufacturing plant, you will play a pivotal role in leading the implementation of the Total Process Safety (TPS) program. This position is designed for a proactive individual who is ready to engage with a diverse workforce, from frontline employees to leadership, to ensure compliance with corporate and local safety standards. Your technical expertise will be essential in driving a culture of safety and continuous improvement across the facility, which consists of three processing plants and employs over 100 plant operations colleagues along with more than 50 contractors. In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating process safety activities, leading the TPS Committee, and establishing a safety culture that emphasizes risk reduction and the prevention of process safety incidents. You will monitor and evaluate process safety performance, collaborating with leadership to develop and implement necessary improvements. Additionally, you will work closely with the Global Process Hazard Analysis Manager to lead local Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and facilitate incident investigations, ensuring that safety alerts and best practices are communicated effectively. Your responsibilities will also include acting as the Process Safety Reviewer for Management of Change (MOC) requests, championing safety checks, and representing TPS on improvement and capital investment projects. You will provide TPS training to various levels of plant leadership and engineers, maintain and update the facility's Process Safety Management (PSM) programs, and participate in audits and self-assessments. As the Fire Protection System Coordinator, you will coordinate Mechanical Integrity efforts and ensure compliance with safety regulations, all while maintaining a hands-on leadership style that fosters collaboration and results.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the process safety program for the facility: implement, manage, maintain and improve.
  • Coordinate process safety activities at the facility.
  • Lead the facility's TPS Committee.
  • Establish a safety culture across the facility based on reviewing and meeting goals, continuous risk reduction and prevention of process safety incidents.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report process safety performance at the facility and work with leadership on developing and implementing improvements.
  • Work collaboratively with the TPS Technology Team on TPS programs and goals.
  • Lead or participate in local Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and related action plans.
  • Lead or facilitate local TPS incident investigations; prepare and share Safety Alerts and Best Practices.
  • Act as the Process Safety Reviewer on Management of Change (MOC) requests for the facility.
  • Champion all CSD, DHA system checks, Hexane detection checks, Equipment guarding.
  • Act as the facility's TPS Representative on Improvement projects and Capital Investment projects.
  • Provide TPS training to different layers of plant leadership and engineers at the facility.
  • Maintain and update the facility's PSM programs and manage implementation in the plant to keep the facility safe and in compliance.
  • Participate in PSM and TPS Audits; conduct or lead self-assessments for the facility.
  • Organize and ensure maintenance of technical process safety documentation.
  • Act as the facility's Fire Protection System (FPS) Coordinator.
  • Coordinate Mechanical Integrity efforts and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, and Agricultural Engineering)
  • 2+ years of process safety experience preferably in a chemical manufacturing or agricultural processing facility
  • Robust experience in applying the 14 elements of PSM
  • Strong problem-solving, diagnostic and analytical skills, with a results-focused approach
  • Strong hands-on leadership style, change management and project/program management skills
  • Excellent time and priority management skills to balance time spent in plant and in the office (70/30)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, acts as a reliable pro-active communicator
  • A drive for success, a continuous improvement approach, a consistently positive attitude and outlook
  • Cultural awareness and the ability to bridge cross-cultural boundaries
  • Ability to work effectively with others and be willing to work in plant areas (i.e. walk long distances, stand, climb stairs and ladders and move through close spaces)
