About the position

The Process Safety Technical Support Engineer at BASF is responsible for providing technical support in process safety engineering across various operating divisions. This role involves collaborating with EHS staff, engineers, and site leaders to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions that enhance safety and integrity in chemical processes. The engineer will implement safety codes, conduct gap analyses, and support compliance with safety regulations, ensuring best practices are followed to maximize asset safety and performance.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with operating divisions and EHS staff to develop process safety engineering solutions.
• Implement API, NFPA, and ASME codes and standards for pressure safety valves and compliance with local regulations.
• Conduct process safety gap analyses and provide recommendations for improvement.
• Assist in Facility Siting Studies and model scenarios using PHAST or SafeSite software.
• Lead compliance with OSHA PSM and Responsible Care requirements, improving process hazard assessments.
• Perform calculations and simulations for overpressure and explosion protections, and support PSM/RC audits.
• Work towards achieving BASF Process Safety Experts levels and lead training initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience in Process Safety and/or Process Engineering in the chemical industry.
• Solid technical foundation in chemical process safety engineering.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Process Hazards & Risk Assessments.
• Proven track record with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP standards.
• Strong understanding of explosion protection and NFPA codes and standards.
• Familiarity with API and CCPS guidelines.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with ASPEN models, FlareNet, and Flow calculations.
• Knowledge of chemical process design and safety systems.
