About the position

The Produce/Department Leader is responsible for implementing company and division policies to maximize sales and profits in the produce department. This role emphasizes the company's core values, including respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety, while fostering a positive customer experience and managing department operations effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Develop maximum customer relations by produce department personnel through personal example of friendliness and courtesy, and implementation of all company policies.
  • Assist in store security and handle customer complaints effectively.
  • Make recommendations regarding the hiring, firing, disciplining, demoting, transferring, and evaluating all produce department personnel.
  • Ensure proper indoctrination of all department employees and provide adequate training on price marking and customer service.
  • Supervise all aspects of salad bar operations and discuss efficient working schedules with the store manager.
  • Maintain a clean and neat appearance of departmental staff, ensuring they are properly uniformed and identified.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and control the activities of the produce department, taking charge of store operations in the absence of the store manager.
  • Direct the receiving, storing, pricing, and merchandising of all produce products, ensuring adequate stock and supplies through proper ordering.
  • Maintain and submit required records and reports effectively, ensuring good housekeeping in all areas of the department.
  • Continuously analyze all aspects of the produce department and make recommendations for improvements.

Requirements

  • Willingness to be flexible and work various shifts including mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Understanding of key components of department operations including managing people, merchandising, inventory management, and customer service.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to make intelligent decisions quickly.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and positively, making a good impression on associates and customers.
  • Skills in effective production, merchandising, and customer service related to the sale of merchandise.
  • Desired experience in produce work or similar experience in food preparation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in a grocery or retail environment.
  • Knowledge of food safety and handling procedures.
