About the position

The Product Designer is a vital member of a dynamic team of design professionals at Canadian Tire Corporation, dedicated to creating innovative products for outdoor recreation. This role requires a deep appreciation for outdoor adventure and a commitment to producing high-quality, stylish, and performance-driven products. The designer will work closely with senior team members and cross-functional partners to develop concepts and production-ready designs that align with customer needs and brand standards. The position involves creating products for various CTC outdoor recreation brand labels, including Woods, Outbound, Huntshield, Yukon Gear, and Helly Hansen, across categories such as backpacks, lighting, tents, sleeping bags, and camp accessories. In this role, the designer will initiate and interpret research to generate new product concepts based on design briefs. They will communicate product ideas through sketches, photo renderings, and technical specifications, utilizing color, patterns, textures, and imagery to convey the brand's core positioning. Attention to detail is crucial, as the designer must ensure that all products are on-brand and meet the requirements set by the product team. The designer will also manage the product development process according to the product creation calendar, ensuring timely delivery of seasonal goals and deliverables. Building strong relationships with manufacturing partners and cross-functional teams is essential for success in this role. The designer will engage in effective communication and may need to travel to manufacturing facilities to ensure that all new projects and existing products meet cost targets and financial objectives. Additionally, the designer will attend trade shows for market research and sales meetings to gain insights into customer and product requirements, while also assessing the competitive landscape to create brand-appropriate equipment that resonates with the target consumer.

Responsibilities

  • Create concepts and production-ready design strategies for outdoor recreation products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to develop innovative product ideas.
  • Communicate product concepts through sketches, photo renderings, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure all products meet brand requirements and targets as outlined in design briefs.
  • Manage the product development process according to the product creation calendar.
  • Build productive relationships with manufacturing partners and product teams.
  • Attend trade shows for market research and sales meetings to understand customer needs.
  • Assess the competitive market landscape to design appropriate equipment.

Requirements

  • Accredited degree in Industrial Design or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a product design role.
  • Strong expertise in Adobe C-Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop).
  • Additional 3D modeling experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office.
  • Familiarity with PLM (Product Line Management) tools.
  • Knowledge of common manufacturing techniques such as cut-and-sew, screen printing, and injection molding.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills to convey ideas effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and maintain effective communication.
