About the position

The UX team at Root is a collaborative group dedicated to delivering innovation and customer value within the Product & Marketing organization. This role presents a unique opportunity to bring fresh, creative thinking to the insurance industry, which is often seen as antiquated. The team is tasked with redefining how customers interact with their insurance products, focusing on enhancing user experience and engagement. As a product designer, you will work closely with product managers, engineers, and UX researchers to create elegant solutions to complex problems. Your role will involve not only designing user interfaces but also engaging in problem definition, customer research, and storytelling to advocate for user-centered design. You will be part of a growing team of UX experts, including designers, researchers, and writers, all committed to reinventing the insurance experience. Root promotes a flexible work environment, allowing you to work from wherever suits you best across the US, while maintaining a headquarters in Columbus for those who prefer a more traditional office setting.

Responsibilities

  • Design user interfaces that are easy to understand and beautifully crafted.
  • Distill complex problems into easy-to-understand user flows and wireframes.
  • Drive a deep understanding of customer psychology and needs to develop hypothesis-driven solutions and testing.
  • Identify when and how to conduct user research and implement insights into action.
  • Take ownership of work by leading the design process from concept to delivery.
  • Advocate for evidence-based decision-making, customer needs, and excellent UX.
  • Lead workshops with cross-functional teams to facilitate divergent thinking and improve user experiences.
  • Use storytelling to articulate design recommendations and the rationale behind them.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of experience as a product designer.
  • Strong experience with website and mobile app design.
  • A strong portfolio showcasing design process and craftsmanship.
  • Excellent understanding of design principles, typography, and layout.
  • Expert working knowledge of Figma.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically about customer value.
  • Comfortable designing products from MVP to ideal state.
  • Self-starter who thrives in ambiguity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Passion for your craft.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the insurance industry or FinTech.
  • Familiarity with user research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards in design.
