About the position

We are seeking a full-time Product Designer Intern in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for learning and applying fundamental usability and user-centered design principles to guide software user interface development for various products with different specifications. You will work closely with user experience designers, software engineers, production artists, and product managers of the assigned project. This internship is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in the field of product design, allowing you to develop your skills in a collaborative environment. As a Product Designer Intern, you will learn to research, design, and prototype new user experiences for new features. You will create design mockups, wireframes, and capture interactivity and business logic, which are required for proper design implementation, following Garmin's development methodology with guidance. You will also learn to produce creative, simple, and highly usable solutions for how products interact in response to human behavior. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work closely with user experience designers and production artists, software engineers, and product managers to determine design directions. You will assist with new user interface testing and conduct usability tests to gather feedback on new designs. Additionally, you will maintain and ensure user interface design and behavioral consistency across Garmin products, contributing to the overall user experience and product quality.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to research, design and prototype new user experiences for new features.

  • Produce creative, simple and highly usable solutions for product interactions.
  • Work closely with user experience designers, production artists, software engineers, and product managers to determine design directions.

  • Collaborate and communicate with teams in engineering and product management to produce superior solutions.
  • Maintain and ensure user interface design and behavioral consistency across Garmin products.

Requirements

  • Completed coursework in Interactive Design, Human Factors, or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user-centered design principles.
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0).
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Relevant experience and/or training related to user interface design and behavior.

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5).
  • Software skills: Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Flash or After Effects.
  • Previous experience working in a team environment.
  • Artistic eye for usability design with relation to the mobile platform.
