About the position

Valmont Industries is seeking a Product Designer to join our team in Valley, NE. This Individual Contributor position is responsible for the design and drafting of products, focusing on the origination and development of concepts and presenting innovative customer solutions to project designs. The incumbent will read and interpret customer order information, process orders for production, and prepare necessary drawings and data for various teams and manufacturing facilities under the direction of the Engineering Manager. This role requires independent interaction with other departments to resolve customer order and manufacturing issues, ensuring that the design and order processes are efficient and effective. The Product Designer will be tasked with interpreting customer specifications, plans, and other order information to determine the required format for completing customer orders. The incumbent will also be responsible for resolving any inconsistencies or missing information by communicating with customers, the Engineering Manager, or Senior Designers. This position is critical to the department's success, as it involves establishing work routines and schedules to maintain efficient order flow. The designer will have the opportunity to identify and recommend revisions to standard product designs and drafting procedures to improve departmental performance. In this role, the incumbent will investigate and analyze design problems, determine necessary changes to meet project demands, and prepare sketches for use by other designers. The position requires effective communication with customers and other departments to ensure that specifications are met and to provide assistance on project-based tasks. The designer will also manage the department backlog, monitor order schedules, and maintain productivity output in accordance with departmental priorities. This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager and does not have any direct reports.

Responsibilities

  • Design and draft products based on customer specifications and project requirements.
  • Read and interpret customer order information to process production orders and prepare necessary drawings.
  • Independently interface with other departments to resolve manufacturing and customer order issues.
  • Investigate and analyze design problems and determine necessary changes to meet project demands.
  • Prepare sketches and drawings for use in producing manufacturing plans and communicate with customers to resolve specification questions.
  • Manage the department backlog by monitoring order schedules and providing updates to computerized backlog.
  • Maintain required productivity output and order accuracy in accordance with departmental priorities.
  • Identify and recommend changes to standard drafting procedures and designs to improve customer acceptance or reduce product costs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience, or 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience utilizing design fundamentals on various manufacturing materials.
  • Technical skills in computer-aided drafting and basic understanding of mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry).
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor (2013 or newer) and AutoCAD (2013).
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret manufacturing drawings and design constraints.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and a number/math orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or other technical role.
  • Basic knowledge of Valmont products and 3-D modeling parametric techniques.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes used to make similarly structured products.
