About the position

Under the direction of the applicable Product Development Supervisor, the Product Designer is responsible for design, design detailing, and modeling of custom and standard products related to all product lines, such as Telecom, Automotive, and Hand Tools. Uses CAD to create concepts, details, assemblies, and production drawings. Performs calculations, tolerance stack-ups, and resin selections. Writes Design and Product specifications, and DFMEA's. Manages Engineering tasks for assigned projects. Professionally communicate.

Responsibilities

  • Create/Change Engineering drawings.
  • Design and develop innovative, competitive, plastic routing and clipping fasteners that meet the Design Specifications as directed.
  • Maintain design specifications as a living document.
  • Design and develop new products within defined timetables with no design changes after product launch, on budget.
  • Write or validate Design Specifications, DFMEA's, DVP&R's, and Purchase 3D CAD.
  • Use CAD to create concepts, details, assemblies, and production drawings.
  • Perform CAD document and data control in our PDM software.
  • Use our ERP system for product look-up and purchasing requests.
  • Schedule, record details, and distribute summaries of Engineering Design Reviews.
  • Provide CAD models that are free from model errors, geometry and/or surface holes or overlaps, circular references, and corrupt files.
  • Use Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to control product profiles and locations.
  • Calculate tolerance stackups to control the fit between mating parts.
  • Request mold fill analysis at critical stages of new product designs.
  • Request patent searches for new designs and review patents before final submission.
  • Effectively work with and guide Engineering personnel to obtain project-supporting services.
  • Maintain up-to-date accurate records in a journal and in project documentation as Design tests.
  • Work with the Validation Department to Design tests and develop test fixtures to measure actual part performance against design specs.
  • Validate actual product performance against design specs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma, Preferred is an Associate Degree in Mechanical Design, Plastics Engineering Technology or equivalent.
  • 1+ years of 3D CAD software skills, classes or on-the-job experience.
  • Excellent technical writing skills required.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills required.
  • High mechanical aptitude.
  • Software skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Capable and willing to travel by vehicle or airplane up to approximately two to four times per year.
