About the position

Chartwell Studio is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Product Design & Operations Intern to join our team in Chicago. This is a part-time, 6-month contract position with the potential for hire, offering 20-30 hours of work per week at a competitive pay rate of $19-$20 per hour. The ideal candidate will be a current college student or recent graduate with a passion for product design and a willingness to engage in both creative and administrative tasks. As an intern, you will support our design team in various capacities, particularly in CAD modeling using Rhinoceros 3D. You will assist in the development of new product concepts, ensuring they align with current design trends and customer feedback. Your role will also involve prototyping finished packaged products using various media, as well as participating in value engineering initiatives aimed at optimizing product designs for manufacturing efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In addition to design responsibilities, you will perform administrative tasks such as managing sample inventory and preparing sample kits for customers. You will gain insights into shipping and logistics, including understanding carton sizes and weights based on piece counts. This position also offers the unique opportunity to communicate directly with partners and suppliers in both China and the USA, enhancing your international experience. Notably, you will have the chance to participate in a trip to China in November to visit suppliers alongside our Product Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design team with CAD modeling, particularly using Rhino, and assist in packaging design.
  • Help create concepts for new products, incorporating design trends and customer feedback.
  • Participate in prototyping conceptual and finished packaged products with multi-media.
  • Engage in value engineering initiatives to optimize product designs for manufacturing efficiencies and cost-effectiveness.
  • Perform administrative duties, including sample inventory management and arranging sample kits for customers.
  • Understand basic shipping concepts, including determining the size and weight of cartons based on piece count.
  • Maintain direct contact with partners and factories in China and the USA.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant college program (e.g., Product Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design).
  • Basic skills in CAD modeling, specifically with Rhino and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Understanding of packaging design principles.
  • Basic knowledge of shipping and logistics.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with international partners.
  • Willingness to handle a mix of creative and administrative tasks.
