About the position

The Product Development Sales Engineer Hybrid position serves as a crucial communication hub among three key departments: operations, sales, and engineering. This role is essential for ensuring that clear communication is maintained and documented between these groups. The Sales Engineer acts as a primary point of contact for sales support related to all Telkonet products and services, ensuring that controls are sold, set up, and configured correctly across various HVAC systems. Additionally, the Sales Engineer is responsible for monitoring customer systems, addressing outages, and resolving hardware or software issues promptly and proactively, ensuring that all customer inquiries and requests are handled efficiently. In this role, the Sales Engineer must be comfortable working with complex HVAC system controls and wiring, engaging with both existing and prospective clients on the technical aspects of Telkonet products, and conducting physical surveys of HVAC equipment. They will collaborate with the sales team on quote specifics and cost-based decision-making. The Sales Engineer also serves as the engineering support, customer project support, and internal company support, acting as a tier 2 support escalation point. As the Subject Matter Expert on Telkonet products, services, and integrations, they will play a vital role in training the sales staff, ensuring that the sales teams and partners are well-informed about the products, services, and necessary systems and processes to complete the order lifecycle. The Sales Engineer's responsibilities include qualifying new project requests for HVAC compatibility with Telkonet products, researching various manufacturers and models of HVAC units for control sequences, designing relay kits and wire schematics for manual control units, and providing support to existing customers regarding the setup and installation of Telkonet controls and peripherals. They will also assist in developing standard processes and tools, establish ongoing partnerships with customers on assigned projects, conduct facility energy and wireless propagation audits, and work with various teams to enhance best practices based on project learnings. The role requires maintaining relationships with suppliers and vendors, staying current with engineering standards, and assisting in preparing customer documents and submittals. The Sales Engineer should expect to travel approximately 50% of the time, and other duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in qualifying new project requests to ensure HVAC compatibility with Telkonet products.
  • Research various manufacturers and models of HVAC units for control sequences.
  • Design relay kits and/or wire schematics for operating manual control units via DDC.
  • Support existing customers on questions regarding setup and installation of all Telkonet controls and peripherals.
  • Provide HVAC-related assistance and training to entry-level technical and support staff.
  • Support the development of standard processes and tools in performing tasks.
  • Establish ongoing partnerships with customers on assigned projects.
  • Conduct facility energy and wireless propagation audits and determine the most appropriate product application.
  • Work with sales, project delivery team, and post-project M&V teams to enhance and develop best practices.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors who offer products and solutions that support Telkonet solutions.
  • Remain current with relevant engineering or design standards and practices, and maintain relevant professional certifications and licenses.
  • Serve as a conduit for custom engineering requests.
  • Assist in establishing costs and managing expectations of timelines for custom engineering fulfillment.
  • Drive the compatibility matrix and its updates ensuring regular incremental additions are captured.
  • Support engineering, process, or financial tasks during project development and solution design for clients.
  • Assist in preparing submittals and other customer documents as needed.

Requirements

  • Certification from college or technical school in trade field (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, maintenance, etc.) helpful but not required.
  • 4+ years in Residential/Commercial HVAC technical experience or related time in mechanical/electrical field.
  • A strong understanding of industry terminology in HVAC controls and HVAC control wiring.
  • Ability to be hands-on both in the field and via email, phone, or other communications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexible travel schedule and valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to provide clear documentation and instruction on field changes or designs.
  • Strong organization, time management, communication, and computer skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bi-lingual is a huge plus (Spanish).
  • General computer and networking knowledge is required.
  • Show competence in troubleshooting network equipment and end-user connection settings.
  • Must have a wide range of commercial hospitality HVAC system experience.
  • Must have a professional, outgoing, guest-service oriented manner.
  • Must be detail-oriented and work effectively under pressure while meeting all applicable deadlines.
