About the position

The Product Engineer position at MAHLE Manufacturing Management Inc. is a critical role within the product engineering team focused on the development of AC compressors. This position is based in Lockport, New York, and is designed for an Electrical Engineer who will support the Compressor Product Engineering Group in creating automotive air conditioning compressor designs tailored for global customer vehicle applications. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on individual, actively participating in all facets of the product development process, which includes product design, component selection, prototype builds, testing, and analysis of test data. In this role, the engineer will work closely with the MAHLE Compressor Product Development team to drive product development and customer launch activities. Responsibilities include designing and developing electric drive AC compressor electrical components, which encompasses all aspects of motor drive electronics hardware architecture and design. The engineer will also assist in the preparation, building, and testing of compressor product samples, coordinating test programs, and developing engineering specifications for components and assemblies intended for mass production. The position requires creative, diagnostic, and innovative problem-solving skills to address engineering challenges. The engineer will utilize DFMEA/PFMEA processes to ensure robust designs prior to mass production and will be responsible for reading and interpreting blueprints, as well as specifying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Additionally, the engineer will analyze test data, organize results in relation to internal or customer specifications, and apply engineering practices to achieve effective design solutions. Participation in innovation, product cost, and quality improvement initiatives is also expected, along with collaboration in cross-functional teams related to customer program launch activities. The engineer will liaise with suppliers and manufacturing plants to ensure product designs are optimized for value and manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Work within the MAHLE Compressor Product Development team to advance product development and customer launch activities.
  • Design and develop electric drive AC compressor electrical components including all aspects of motor drive electronics hardware architecture and design.
  • Assist with preparation, build, and testing of compressor product samples and coordination of test programs.
  • Develop and author engineering specifications for components and assemblies to be used in manufacturing facilities to mass-produce compressor components and assemblies.
  • Apply creative, diagnostic, and innovative problem solving to engineering problems.
  • Utilize DFMEA/PFMEA processes to provide a robust design prior to mass production.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and specify Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Assist with preparation and execution of test units.
  • Analyze test data and organize results relative to internal or customer specifications with observations and conclusions.
  • Apply engineering practices to reach design solutions.
  • Participate in innovation, product cost, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams related to customer program launch activity.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing plants to ensure product design for high value and manufacturability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required; Master's degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in development of electrical components and/or power electronics is required; 5 years of experience is preferred.
  • Understanding of principles of thermodynamics and engineering design is preferred.
  • Automotive/Residential/Commercial Air Conditioning compressor development experience is a plus.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office are necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills are required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts are essential.
  • Ability to manage time and organize effectively with multiple projects is necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment is required.
  • Good results orientation and strong work ethic are essential.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in automotive or residential/commercial air conditioning compressor development.
