About the position

The Production Editor at Penguin Random House is responsible for overseeing the production editorial process for a variety of book titles, from manuscript to bound book/ePub. This role involves collaborating with editorial, design, and production teams to ensure high-quality output across multiple genres, including fiction, nonfiction, and more. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, possess strong analytical skills, and be comfortable working in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Handle production editorial work for original titles from manuscript to bound book/ePub, including hardcover-to-paperback conversions.
• Hire freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers for original titles and review their work through all passes.
• Perform quality checks on ebook files.
• Copyedit jacket/cover copy and additional material, proofreading jackets/covers and captions.
• Electronic coding/tagging manuscripts for design and production.
• Collaborate with production, design, and managing editorial departments to maintain book schedules.

Requirements

• At least 3 years' experience as a trade-book production editor or freelancer.
• Strong copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills.
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style and modern copyediting style.
• Ability to manage diverse responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
• Ability to set and meet deadlines.
• Capable of rising to challenges and comfortable asking for help when needed.
• Expertise with electronic copyediting using Microsoft Word.
• Experience with Adobe Acrobat PDF markup tools.
