About the position

The Production Editor at Johns Hopkins University Press is responsible for managing the editorial-production process of book content and related materials. This role involves project management, ensuring quality and timely delivery of publications, and collaborating with various teams including design, marketing, and sales. The Production Editor will also oversee author relations and contractor performance, while contributing to the development of best practices within the manuscript editorial team.

Responsibilities

  • Act as project manager and liaison with authors, contributors, editors, contractors, and service providers on assigned projects.
  • Manage communication and work product of contractors and service providers including copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers.
  • Carry out the editorial-production strategy for assigned publications, monitoring costs and schedules, and maintaining the title database.
  • Perform quality checks throughout the editorial-production process to ensure standards are met.
  • Conduct manuscript editorial team activities such as meetings, generating reports, and analyzing data.
  • Assist department director and managers with evaluating external service offerings and onboarding contractors.
  • Participate in cross-departmental meetings for continuous process improvement.
  • Train, supervise, and direct the work of staff, casual workers, students, and interns.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of two years' book or journal publishing experience, preferably in scholarly or academic publishing, including copyediting experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Publishing industry experience, preferably in a scholarly or academic publishing setting.
  • Copyediting and/or proofreading experience, including familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Advanced Microsoft Word skills and proficiency in the full suite of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Foreign language skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Superior problem-solving skills including using analytics to drive decisions.
