About the position

The University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a dedicated and experienced Production Manager for the Macky Auditorium, a prominent venue that hosts a variety of performances and events. This position is part-time, representing 50% of a full-time role, and is crucial for overseeing the technical aspects of productions at the auditorium. The Production Manager will act as the stage manager, responsible for delegating duties and ensuring that all production activities run smoothly on stage and in other performance areas. This includes mounting and advancing productions, supervising technical crews, and maintaining backstage work areas to ensure a safe and efficient environment for all events. In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Production/Technical Director (ADP/TD), the Production Manager will provide recommendations for equipment acquisition and maintenance cycles. They will also manage and coordinate the scheduling of stage usage, equipment, and personnel for various events at the 2,040-seat Macky Auditorium. This role requires a proactive approach to developing training and skill development programs for the technical crew, ensuring that all staff are well-prepared and knowledgeable about best practices in technical theater. The Production Manager will be expected to provide technical theater production expertise, utilizing various types of rigging, lighting, sound, audiovisual equipment, and props. They will maintain and repair technical theater equipment and production support spaces, making recommendations for new and replacement systems as needed. Additionally, the Production Manager will supervise event set-ups, load-ins, and load-out activities, consulting with artists and clients to analyze on-site technical requirements and triaging any issues that arise during productions. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility in problem-solving, and the ability to maintain accurate records. The Production Manager will engage in departmental meetings and production planning, building professional relationships across the College/University and with industry colleagues to enhance the quality of productions at Macky Auditorium. The work schedule will vary based on performance needs, requiring the ability to work flexible hours and perform physically demanding tasks as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Act as stage manager and delegate duties for production activities at Macky Auditorium.
  • Supervise technical crews and maintain backstage work areas.
  • Provide recommendations for equipment acquisition and maintenance cycles.
  • Manage and coordinate scheduling of stage usage, equipment, and personnel for events.
  • Develop training and skill development programs for the technical crew.
  • Maintain and repair technical theater equipment and production support spaces.
  • Supervise event set-ups, load-ins, and load-out activities.
  • Consult with artists and clients on technical requirements for productions.
  • Triaging issues that arise before and during productions to ensure requirements are met.
  • Train and supervise technical crew consisting of professional technicians and students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Technical Theater, Fine Arts, Engineering, or related field.
  • Three years of experience in technical theater relevant to live event production.
  • Three years of experience in stage management techniques including lighting and sound plots.
  • Two years of experience supervising stage crews and/or students.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility in problem solving.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely records.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Office 365 or Microsoft Office product suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience implementing safety regulations and practices in stage theater work.
  • Four or more years of experience in performing arts technical equipment in a historical venue or higher education environment.
  • One year of experience with event production software such as Ungerboeck, Vectorworks, or Event Booking.
