About the position

O'Neal Steel is currently seeking a Production Manager for our facility in Birmingham, AL. The primary mission of the Production Manager is to develop and maintain an organization capable of operating warehouse and delivery functions in a safe and efficient manner. Incumbents are expected to continuously seek ways to overcome obstacles to improve productivity, service level, quality, safety, efficiency, and creativity. Production Managers must promote continuous improvement in methods, systems, and procedures, while continuing to encourage teamwork, reduce expenses, and develop employee potential. The Production Manager will assist as needed to justify and initiate capital expenditure requests and requests for employee additions and replacements. Ensuring employee development through training and delegation of responsibility is crucial, as is assisting employees in their career planning. The role requires analyzing and initiating efforts to control expenses while operating the plant with a high emphasis on safety and accident prevention. Conducting or attending all monthly safety meetings is a key responsibility, along with initiating employee counseling or disciplinary sessions where appropriate to maintain order, safety, quality, housekeeping, and productivity. The Production Manager will develop and implement procedures designed to improve plant operations and conduct annual performance and wage/salary reviews with subordinate personnel. It is essential to ensure that subordinates are managing their reviews in a manner that recognizes high performance and supports the growth and development of the workforce. The role also involves reviewing and approving expenses related to plant operation and exploring opportunities for expense reduction. Supervising the development and implementation of work schedules for supervisors, warehouse, and delivery personnel is another critical aspect of the job. The Production Manager will educate subordinate employees on district operating policies and procedures and respond to periodic requests for information from management and corporate functions. Encouraging operations employees to offer creative and innovative solutions to problems that impede district growth and profitability is vital. Monitoring and assuring the proper maintenance of plant and equipment, supporting the development and implementation of an effective preventive maintenance program, and suggesting changes in plant layout and design where appropriate are also part of the responsibilities. The Production Manager will monitor the effectiveness of location shipping and receiving operations, drive efficiency improvements in truck scheduling and utilization, and ensure compliance with O'Neal Steel quality policies and manual. Promoting and maintaining effective housekeeping using guidelines and disciplines such as 5-S and Visual Factory is essential, as is reducing and eliminating circumstances that may lead to personal injury of employees or loss or damage of company equipment. The role requires monitoring and maintaining an effective safety program and creating an atmosphere of continuous improvement in all facets of the operation, moving towards increased self-directed work and less direct supervision of employees through the implementation of Lean Manufacturing. Finally, the Production Manager will actively promote excellent customer service through example, training, and ensuring that all commitments to customers are met, including delivery promises, special instructions, and processing tolerances. The role carries a quality responsibility, ensuring high-quality work is provided to all internal and external customers as related to the output of their position.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the utilization of plant equipment, rolling stock and manpower in a lean environment.
  • Ensure compliance with O'Neal Steel quality policies and manual.
  • Encourage operating personnel to reduce processing, shipping and delivery errors; monitor the overall quality of goods and services produced by the operation and actively work to reduce the number of RA's, credits, debits, etc.
  • Promote and maintain effective housekeeping using guidelines and disciplines such as 5-S and Visual Factory.
  • Reduce and eliminate where possible circumstances which may lead to the personal injury of employees, or loss or damage of company equipment. Monitor and maintain an effective safety program.
  • Promote a positive employee environment that will encourage all employees to participate in their growth and the growth of the district. Train supervisory personnel in these techniques.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and EPA standards.
  • Create an atmosphere of continuous improvement in all facets of the operation; move to increase self-directed work and less direct supervision of employees through the implementation of Lean Manufacturing.
  • Actively promote excellent customer service through example, training, and ensuring that all commitments to customers are met, including delivery promises, special instructions and processing tolerances.

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience as a Production Supervisor, supervising operating employees in material handling, processing, fabrication, maintenance, scheduling, delivery and safety.
