About the position

The Production Manager at Airgas is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of acetylene, hydrogen, and propane production at the Hyattsville facility. The Production Manager will lead a team of production associates, guiding them in their daily tasks and ensuring that production goals are met efficiently and effectively. This role involves not only managing the workforce but also coordinating with the Plant Manager and other management team members to facilitate smooth operations across the facility. In this role, the Production Manager will be tasked with promoting a strong safety culture, correcting unsafe acts or conditions promptly, and interpreting company policies to workers. The manager will also be responsible for analyzing production schedules, estimating worker-hour requirements, and maintaining accurate time and production records. Additionally, the role includes coordinating inbound and outbound deliveries, managing inventory levels, and implementing measures to improve production methods and equipment performance. The Production Manager will also play a key role in training new employees, cross-training existing staff, and assisting the Plant Manager with capital investment planning. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, as the manager will need to analyze and resolve work-related issues while motivating the team to achieve their goals. Overall, the Production Manager is essential in ensuring that the production facility operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and directs day-to-day operations of acetylene, hydrogen, and propane production.
  • Supervises the activities of two or more plant production associates.
  • Supports the Plant Manager and collaborates with other management team members for smooth operations.
  • Promotes a strong safety and compliance culture, correcting unsafe acts or conditions immediately.
  • Assigns tasks to workers based on customer needs, stock levels, and worker expertise.
  • Studies production schedules and estimates worker-hour requirements for job assignments, maintaining time and production records.
  • Coordinates inbound and outbound deliveries, supporting truck reconciliation and cylinder yard organization.
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations, correcting unsafe conditions or actions.
  • Implements measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and product quality.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Recommends or initiates associate actions such as new hires, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary measures.
  • Trains new workers and cross-trains employees to ensure continuity during personnel shortages.
  • Assists the Plant Manager with planning and managing capital investments.
  • Coordinates proper inventory levels of supplies and equipment.
  • Performs additional duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Business, or related field required; or up to 4 years of additional related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience in a leadership role within a distribution environment.
  • Prefer prior technical experience with compressed gases, gas analysis, and gas lab equipment.
  • Prior experience utilizing SAP preferred.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Knowledge of compliance related to DOT, OSHA, EPA, SAFECORE, and other business-related compliance activities.
  • Strong analytical skills with a thorough understanding of metrics and tools to improve production efficiency.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, ensuring smooth information flow and effective listening.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure.
  • Self-starter, self-motivated, well-organized, and able to work independently.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to complete compliance documentation accurately and neatly.
  • Demonstrated dedication to product quality and customer satisfaction.
