About the position

The Production Manager Trainee position at Smithfield Foods is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and develop their skills in the pork industry. This role involves comprehensive training in various farm department areas, including breeding, farrowing, nursery, and finishing processes. The trainee will work under supervision to gain certification in all aspects of the company's systems and standards, ensuring compliance with environmental laws and animal welfare policies. The position also requires readiness to respond to emergencies and a commitment to progressing through the Manager Training development program.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and demonstrate capability in all farm department areas including Breeding/Farrowing and Nursery/Finishing.
  • Gain understanding of company systems such as pig production processes, animal flow, and farm health.
  • Perform and master all hourly jobs under supervision, becoming certified in each job after demonstrating competence.
  • Develop and prepare reports on experiences and opportunities for improvement.
  • Comply with all environmental laws and procedures.
  • Complete Leadership Certification and understand company policies regarding biosecurity and animal welfare.
  • Act as the Head of Department (HOD) as needed by management.
  • Be on call for emergency situations such as alarm calls and personnel shortages.
  • Progress in the Manager Training development program and report any issues to Human Resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related Agricultural field, or currently enrolled college student with anticipated graduation by the end of the current semester.
  • Ability to work an average of 48 hours per week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate for training and first managerial assignment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software and computer literacy.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and build strong working relationships.
  • Willingness to learn and perform animal husbandry tasks such as euthanasia, castration, and vaccinations.
  • Ability to operate a high-pressure washing system.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in animal husbandry or related fields.
  • Leadership experience or training.
