About the position

The Production Safety Manager at Boston University's College of Communication, Film & Television is a pivotal role responsible for ensuring the safety of all production activities within the department. This position will provide comprehensive production safety guidance to faculty, staff, and students engaged in various production-related projects, including theatrical motion pictures, television shows, and other content produced locally. The Production Safety Manager will collaborate closely with the university's Risk Management Office, production personnel, regulatory agencies, and various city and state departments to uphold and reinforce safety standards across all productions. In this role, the Production Safety Manager will be tasked with training students in production safety procedures, vetting all projects for potential safety issues, and overseeing student productions to ensure compliance with safety protocols. The department produces over 300 film projects annually, ranging from 3 to 20 minutes in length, necessitating a robust safety framework to protect all participants involved in these creative endeavors. Additionally, the manager may be called upon to address general safety and environmental matters that arise within the production context. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in safety management, particularly within the entertainment industry, and will be adept at navigating the complexities of production safety in a fast-paced environment. This role requires a blend of technical knowledge, regulatory understanding, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, and external regulatory bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide production safety guidance to faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Film and Television.
  • Collaborate with the Risk Management Office and various regulatory agencies to reinforce safety standards.
  • Train students in production safety procedures and oversee student productions regarding safety compliance.
  • Vet all production projects for potential safety issues and recommend necessary precautions.
  • Create safety materials for internal safety departments and external production crews.
  • Lead internal projects and teams focused on safety initiatives.
  • Research and communicate regulatory compliance requirements relevant to filming regions.
  • Travel domestically and internationally for extended periods as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 5-8 years of related experience in safety management, preferably in the entertainment industry.
  • 7 years of safety experience required, with a preference for 5 years in production-related roles.
  • Strong technical writing skills for interaction with legal teams and regulatory agencies.
  • Knowledge of critical aspects of filmmaking, including camera positioning, visual effects, and stunt performer protection.
  • Flexibility and problem-solving skills to address safety challenges effectively.
  • Ability to create and communicate safety materials and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with action shows, reality television, and multi-camera productions.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance in key filming regions.
