About the position

The Production Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Natural Gas Power Plant. This role involves managing various plant systems, including water treatment, turbine systems, and electrical systems, while ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The technician will perform inspections, repairs, and maintenance on mechanical and hydraulic equipment, and will be expected to demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills in their area of responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Estimate starting time for idle generation units and follow prescribed startup procedures to bring units online.
  • Operate PC-based control systems as the Inside Operator in the Steam Plant.
  • Change the loading of turbine/generators as required from the control systems.
  • Read meters and record data at specified intervals in appropriate logs and computers.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment or abnormal meter readings to the supervisor and complete appropriate records.
  • Perform troubleshooting and documentation, assisting in the resolution of problems discovered during the shift.
  • Maintain plant operating history through timely completion of plant logs and required documentation.
  • Make decisions and recommend appropriate repair techniques to the senior operator or supervisor.
  • Provide specialized accurate written documentation of repairs made and all appropriate measurements/readings/conditions through reports or MAXIMO work orders.
  • Understand basic AC/DC Circuit Theory, Digital and Analog Circuit Theory, Power Plant Cycle Theory, and Mechanics.
  • Develop and implement plant operating procedures, understanding the operational relationships of mechanical equipment to plant systems.
  • Provide mechanical and electrical skills for maintaining equipment including steam and combustion turbines, generators, boilers, pumps, motors, and more.
  • Conduct low, medium, and high voltage switching, clearing, and grounding activities for all plant auxiliary equipment.
  • Acquire and use a variety of skills to support daily operations activities such as computer use, electrical schematic interpretation, and precision measurements.
  • Control system voltages and frequencies as requested by dispatcher.
  • May direct the work of other operations employees on shift.
  • Ensure safety compliance of self and others.
  • Assist in keeping records on electrical and electronic equipment, including inspections and overhaul reports.
  • Conduct on-the-job training of other employees in area of expertise.
  • Make effective use of the maintenance planning tools.
  • Comply with safety regulations established by regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • High School education or GED equivalent with four years related experience in a related industry or 2 years related experience and a 2 years Associates Degree in Power/Industrial Technology.
  • Experience in the disassembly/re-assembly and alignment of centrifugal pumps up to 3,000 HP.
  • Experience in the disassembly/re-assembly and packing of Gate valves (14 - 20 inch), Fisher 4 - 20 mA Control Valve trim set/soft goods, and Butterfly Valves (up to 72 inch).
  • Experience operating an Oxygen/Acetylene cutting torch and/or Arc Welding.
  • Experience working with heavy rigging and material handling - Load Rigging.
  • Setup and operate a conventional vertical or horizontal milling machine to manufacture parts from a drawing.
  • Setup and operate a lathe to manufacture parts from a drawing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Mechanical experience preferred, performing mechanical duties as required at apprentice to Journeyman level.
  • Knowledge of proper use of tools, equipment, procedures, and techniques to maintain equipment.
  • Specialized mechanical skills such as welding, machining, safety valve repair, and pump overhaul.
