About the position

The Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves providing engineering assistance under the supervision of the Transportation Maintenance Engineer. The incumbent will play a crucial role in the development of maintenance projects that will be incorporated into the Capital Program. This includes the creation of the Residency Pavement Management Plan and the review of transportation projects to identify and address maintenance issues. The engineer will also oversee maintenance work performed by contractors, investigate claims, and collaborate with Residency staff to assess work needs and formulate plans. Additionally, the role encompasses providing oversight for environmental programs, building facilities, and snow and ice management initiatives. This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), which allows for non-competitive appointments for qualified candidates. While serving in this role, employees will have the opportunity to participate in promotion examinations for which they are eligible. Continued employment in this title is contingent upon maintaining a valid New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration. The role is structured to support the ongoing development and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, ensuring safety and efficiency in the state's transportation systems.

Responsibilities

Requirements

• A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration.
• A qualifying bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related fields, or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience with transportation projects.
• Experience with transportation projects related to highways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, or traffic management systems.
