The Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves working within the Regional Maintenance group as a Regional Transportation Maintenance Program Engineer. The role focuses on assessing and developing work orders for highway repairs, collaborating with geotechnical engineers, and representing maintenance interests in various committees. This position is part of the NY HELPS program, allowing for non-competitive appointments under specific conditions, with the potential for future competitive status.

Responsibilities

• Determine the feasibility of prospective work sites identified by Resident Engineers for repair by standby Work Order Contractor.
• Develop work order packages including scope of work, details, plans, and estimates for highway repairs.
• Identify candidates for guide rail replacement contracts.
• Collaborate with the Regional Geotechnical Engineer to prioritize slope repair candidates for contracts.
• Represent Highway Maintenance on the Region 1 Large Culvert Committee to develop the capital program for culvert repair and replacement.
• Assist Resident Engineers with design-related questions and small culvert inspections using video inspection equipment.
• Participate in various Community of Practice Committees.
• Support the Department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations as part of the Incident Command System.

Requirements

• A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration with a qualifying bachelor's degree in relevant engineering fields or one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience.
• Experience with transportation projects related to highways, railroads, bridges, airports, or traffic management systems.
