About the position

The Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) position at the New York State Department of Transportation involves overseeing and managing engineering projects related to transportation infrastructure. The role includes inspecting state-owned bridges, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with various agencies to ensure safety and compliance. This is a full-time, permanent position requiring a New York State Professional Engineer's license and relevant experience in civil engineering, particularly in transportation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and evaluate both structural and safety flags on State owned bridges.
  • Inspect and resolve all bridge related emergencies and complaints.
  • On call 24/7 to respond to emergencies, Incident Command System, and handle flags.
  • Prepare detailed work orders for both flags and non-flags repairs on bridges.
  • Coordinate with various Regional Groups and NYCDOT to resolve all flags and bridge related work/emergencies.
  • Coordinate with various NYC Agencies to resolve homeless issues/concerns.
  • Lead quality assurance team on all partial and final inspections for State construction contracts.
  • Review and manage Overhead Sign Structure (OSS) flags and repair requests.
  • Coordinate and review contract plans and permits.
  • Respond and resolve ongoing construction contract issues; W&W, NSCO and maintenance contracts.
  • Manage and monitor cost, progress, and database for the various Where and When Contracts.
  • Maintain and manage the safety and structural flags database.
  • Attend/coordinate monthly State-City task force meetings.
  • Prepare IPP (Initial Project Proposal) and Scope of Work for Maintenance Projects.
  • Develop PSE (Plans, Specifications and Estimate) for Maintenance Projects.

Requirements

  • A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration with a qualifying bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related fields.
  • One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, or traffic management and safety systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Incident Command System operations.
  • Familiarity with NYC agency coordination and emergency response protocols.
