About the position

The Professional Engineer 1 (Electrical) will work within the Resilience Section of the Office of Resilience, Utility Security, Nuclear Affairs and Emergency Preparedness (OREP) at the New York State Department of Public Service. This role involves performing complex engineering analyses related to electric transmission and distribution systems, ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards, and providing professional engineering services for large-scale projects. The position requires a New York State Professional Engineer's license and offers opportunities for mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform complex engineering analysis of major utilities and services related to electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • Provide expert knowledge of electric facility design and system resilience standards development.
  • Analyze rate proceedings and prepare staff positions through testimony.
  • Review and analyze utility cost allocation and rate design.
  • Develop and review emergency plans and analyze data relevant to supply planning.
  • Investigate and analyze utility distribution operations and service quality.
  • Promote utility safety design, construction, and operations.
  • Investigate incidents affecting safety and provide supervisory guidance to junior engineers.

Requirements

  • A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration.
  • A qualifying bachelor's degree in relevant engineering fields or one year of full-time engineering experience in electrical systems.
