About the position

The Professional Engineer 1 (Electrical) position at the New York State Department of Public Service involves performing complex engineering analyses related to electric transmission and distribution systems. The role focuses on ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of utility operations while providing professional engineering services. The incumbent will work in the Office of Resilience, Utility Security, Nuclear Affairs, and Emergency Preparedness, contributing to the oversight of major utilities and their vegetation management programs.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform complex engineering analysis of major utilities and services related to electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • Analyze rate proceedings and prepare staff position through testimony.
  • Review and analyze utility cost allocation and rate design.
  • Develop and review emergency plans and collect and analyze data relevant to supply planning and emergency plans.
  • Investigate and analyze utility distribution operations and planning systems as well as service quality.
  • Promote utility safety design, construction, and operations.
  • Investigate incidents that may directly affect safety or have broader safety implications.
  • Provide supervisory and mentoring guidance to OREP Assistant Engineers and Engineer Trainees.

Requirements

  • A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration.
  • A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in relevant engineering fields or one year of full-time engineering experience in electrical systems.
