About the position

The Professional Expert - ASL Interpreter (Spanish) at Imperial Valley College is responsible for providing interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and community members. This role requires adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and involves interpreting lectures, presentations, and various academic activities. The position is temporary, with a maximum of 20 hours per week and a total of 999 hours over 100 days.

Responsibilities

• Provide interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students, faculty, staff, and community members.
• Interpret or transliterate class lectures and presentations from English to American Sign Language (Voice-to-Sign) and vice versa (Sign-to-Voice).
• Interpret class-related events such as field trips, student-teacher conferences, and tutoring sessions.
• Adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct while performing interpreting duties.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Demonstrate solid knowledge of ASL, CASE/PSE/Contact Sign, fingerspelling, and numbers.
• Completion of Imperial Valley College's interpreter evaluation with a Level III score required for Level III candidates.
• Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) strongly preferred for Level IV candidates.
• Demonstrate minimum performance competence to meet national certification standards for Level IV candidates.
• Possess NIC Certification, preferably NIC Advanced or NIC Master level certification for Level V candidates.
• Current proof of certification required for Level V candidates.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with other modes of communication and sign systems such as Pidgin Signed English or Conceptually Accurate Signed English.
• Knowledge of cultural and social aspects of the Deaf community.
• Ability to work independently and confidentially.

Benefits

• Salary range of $15.50 - $65.00 hourly based on experience and certification level.
