About the position

The Professional Geologist will be employed within the Department of Engineering and will be responsible for specialized work related to all Capital Program projects that have potential geological elements. The incumbent will provide extensive support to Maintenance forces for oversight of rockslide repairs and corrective/preventative work activities. The Incumbent will provide critical professional services in order to maintain the safety and operation of the Thruway, and to perform geology design/construction support services.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing the results of investigations, field or laboratory procedures, geologic reports, and geophysical data and providing recommendations to address needs
  • Conducting periodic condition inventory of all rock slope
  • Making recommendations pertaining to rock slope designs and foundation designs of structures
  • Evaluating the suitability of blasted bedrock for alternative uses
  • Conducting soil and groundwater evaluations including the development or analysis of geologic and hydro-geologic investigations, reports, studies and management plans and oversight of water well contractors
  • Preparing specifications and developing testing and quality assurance for mineral aggregates
  • Providing construction support for the Thruway Capital Program projects and provision of assistance to the Department of Maintenance and Operations related to potential geological issues

Requirements

  • Current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent competitive service as a Professional Geologist 1 and eligible for transfer
  • A New York State Professional Geologist's license and current registration
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology
