About the position

The Professional Geologist position at the Arkansas Department of Health involves conducting and overseeing scientific research and analysis of geological resources, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. The role requires planning and preparing geological maps, analyzing geological data, and providing expert advice on geologic risks and mitigation strategies. This position is classified as safety-sensitive and requires frequent in-state travel.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and oversee scientific research and analysis of rocks and minerals.
• Plan and prepare geological maps, cross-sections, charts, technical reports, and publications.
• Analyze and interpret geological, geochemical, and geophysical information from various sources.
• Review pre-applications for permitted facilities for adequacy and compliance with state regulations.
• Monitor sites after application approval for compliance.
• Identify geologic risks and provide advice on mitigation strategies.
• Plan and conduct geological, geochemical, geohazards, and geophysical field studies and surveys.
• Locate and identify potential resources of natural gas, oil, coal, minerals, aggregates, and groundwater.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in geology or a related field.
• Three years of experience with scientific research or a related field.
• Registered as a Professional Geologist by the Arkansas State Board of Registration for Professional Geologists.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in hydrology, hydrogeology, and/or geochemistry.
• Extensive experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
• Good writing and communication skills.
• Experience with Arkansas geology.
