About the position

Our client, a certified managing general agency serving independent agents throughout the southeast for over sixty years, is seeking Professional Lines Underwriters to join their team in Alpharetta, Georgia. This role is pivotal in prospecting and appointing additional agents to distribute Professional products, as well as working with existing carrier appointments to facilitate the overall growth of the Professional business. The successful candidate will be responsible for educating and training existing agency appointments on Professional products and capabilities, ensuring they are well-equipped to represent the agency's offerings effectively. In this position, you will quote all new and renewal Professional related business while monitoring industry trends and results, responding as necessary to maintain competitiveness. You will lead the development of product enhancements based on these trends and the performance of the book, ensuring long-term sustainability. A critical aspect of the role involves reviewing underwriting results to determine improvement plans and identifying new business opportunities to increase profitability. Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with the IT and operations management team to develop process efficiencies and appropriate systems. As the team grows, you will also be responsible for hiring, coaching, mentoring, and developing staff, overseeing new employee onboarding, and providing career development planning and opportunities to ensure the achievement of department service standards. Analyzing key metrics of Underwriters will be essential to identify areas for improvement and development opportunities. Additionally, you will analyze underwriting data to determine approval for risk selection, acceptance, coverage, and pricing. The role requires up to 25% travel to agencies for the development and maintenance of profitable business relationships, as well as preparing for carrier audits and responding to findings as required.

Responsibilities

  • Prospect and appoint additional agents to distribute Professional products.
  • Work with existing carrier appointments to facilitate overall growth of Professional business.
  • Educate and train existing agency appointments on Professional products and capabilities.
  • Quote all new and renewal Professional related business.
  • Monitor industry trends and results, responding as necessary.
  • Lead the development of product enhancements based on industry trends and performance of the book.
  • Review underwriting results to determine improvement plans and new business opportunities.
  • Work closely with IT and operations management team to develop process efficiencies and appropriate systems.
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning.
  • Analyze key metrics of Underwriters to identify areas of improvement and development opportunities.
  • Analyze Underwriting data to determine approval for risk selection, acceptance, coverage, and price.
  • Prepare for carrier audits and respond to findings as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree along with 3-5+ years of Professional Insurance experience required (Ex E&O).
  • Background working with an MGA and national programs required.
  • Proven background creating and placing new business, and opening doors to create new business partners within the independent retail agency systems required.
  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts and policies, and the ability to influence book management plans across geographies and classes of business for professional lines.
  • Understanding of key drivers of profitability and operational performance.
  • Proficiency in technology required, including Microsoft Office products and the ability to adapt quickly to new software applications and carrier systems.
  • Professional verbal and written communication along with strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a productivity-based environment, multitask, and have strong organizational and prioritization skills.
