About the position

The Professional Staff Nurse at UPMC Hamot is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care in the Medical Respiratory Intermediate Unit. This role involves managing patient care activities, collaborating with healthcare teams, and ensuring positive patient outcomes. The nurse will work with patients requiring various respiratory therapies and will play a key role in patient education and support throughout their care journey.

Responsibilities

  • Set standards for the level and quality of nursing care.
  • Manage and provide patient care activities for a group of patients and their families.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Demonstrate accountability for actions and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Communicate safety hazards identified in the workplace.
  • Provide detailed teaching to patients and families.
  • Support the development of students and new staff as a preceptor.
  • Create an environment of open dialogue and continuous development.
  • Formulate daily goals and a plan of care for patients.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking in identifying patient care issues.
  • Ensure comprehensive patient documentation to promote communication.
  • Create a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience.
  • Participate in unit-based shared governance and quality improvement efforts.
  • Utilize research and evidence-based practice to support clinical care improvements.

Requirements

  • Zero to two years of nursing experience preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with patients and healthcare teams.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity, with physical stamina for patient care activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.
