About the position

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is seeking a Professor of Practice to serve as the Director of Athletic Bands, responsible for leading the Vaquero Marching Band in preparation for the inaugural Division I college football season in Fall 2025. This non-tenure track position offers a 3-year appointment with the potential for renewal and longer-term opportunities based on performance evaluations. The Director will oversee the marching band, conduct a concert band, and collaborate with other faculty and university departments to enhance the band program and engage with the community.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Vaquero Marching Band and prepare for the Fall 2025 season.
  • Conduct a concert band during the spring semester.
  • Supervise graduate teaching assistants in the marching band program.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands and percussion faculty.
  • Coordinate with UTRGV Athletics and Spirit Programs for public events and performances.
  • Offer summer band camps for pre-college students and marching band members.
  • Teach additional courses related to marching band techniques and conducting.

Requirements

  • Master of Music (MM) from an accredited institution.
  • Experience as Director or Assistant Director of Athletic Band Program in NCAA Division I or II institution with a football program.
  • Demonstrated record of recruitment and program building.
  • Strong professional administrative and management skills.
  • Potential for high-level scholarly/artistic achievement.
  • Ability to collaborate with music faculty and athletics staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) or PhD in Music from an accredited institution.
  • Previous public school teaching experience at the high school level, including marching band.

Benefits

  • Salary range of $115,000-$125,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
