About the position

The Student Center & Sustainability Office at Southern Illinois University is seeking a Program Coordinator for Sustainability and the Saluki Food Pantry. This position is pivotal in overseeing the operations of the Saluki Food Pantry and managing various initiatives and events within the Sustainability Office. The Program Coordinator will play a crucial role in promoting sustainability on campus while ensuring that the food pantry effectively serves the needs of students and the community. This role requires a dynamic individual who can engage with students, faculty, and community members to foster a culture of sustainability and support food security initiatives. The Program Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising student employees, Graduate Assistants, and volunteers for both the Saluki Food Pantry and the Sustainability Office. They will plan, coordinate, market, and evaluate events such as campus and community food drives, sustainability events aimed at reducing environmental impact, and other related activities. Additionally, the coordinator will be tasked with marketing and promoting the Saluki Food Pantry and Sustainability Office during various events, both on and off campus, ensuring that the initiatives reach a broad audience. In this role, the Program Coordinator will prepare and present reports to the Saluki Food Pantry Advisory Committee, the Sustainability Council, and fiscal partnering organizations. They will also assist in researching and writing grants to support the initiatives of the Saluki Food Pantry and Sustainability Office. Maintaining confidentiality when dealing with student information and sensitive situations is paramount. The coordinator will represent SIU Sustainability and the Saluki Food Pantry publicly in the community and at regional and national meetings and conferences. The position also involves managing sustainability projects in collaboration with SIU faculty, staff, students, and community members, as well as maintaining relationships with community organizations and non-profits to support intersecting programs. The Program Coordinator will assist with inventory management, including stocking food supplies and maintaining financial and donation records for the Saluki Food Pantry. They will also assist with staff coverage for evening, weekend, and special events as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Recruits, trains, schedules, and supervises student employees, Graduate Assistants, and volunteers for the Saluki Food Pantry and Sustainability Office.
  • Plans, coordinates, markets, and evaluates Saluki Food Pantry & Sustainability Office events such as campus/community food drives, tabling events, sustainability events that lower environmental impact, etc.
  • Markets and promotes the Saluki Food Pantry & Sustainability Office during events both on and off campus.
  • Prepares and presents reports to the Saluki Food Pantry Advisory Committee, Sustainability Council, and fiscal partnering organizations.
  • Assists with the research and/or writing of grants in support of Saluki Food Pantry & Sustainability Office initiatives.
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with student information and sensitive situations.
  • Serves on campus committees as assigned and attends meetings on behalf of the Saluki Food Pantry and Sustainability Office.
  • Publicly represents SIU Sustainability and the Saluki Food Pantry in the community and at regional and national meetings/conferences.
  • Assists with purchases, marketing requests, and website updates for the Sustainability Office and the Saluki Food Pantry.
  • Stocks inventory and places regular food orders for the Saluki Food Pantry.
  • Maintains inventory documentation, financial records, donation records, and user statistics for the Saluki Food Pantry.
  • Manages sustainability projects, under guidance of the director, with SIU faculty, staff, students, and community members.
  • Maintains relationships with community organizations and non-profits to support intersecting programs.
  • Assists with staff coverage for evening, weekend, and special events as needed.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in sustainability, public health, nutrition, social work, counseling, psychology, higher education/education administration, environmental studies or any other related field.
  • Additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position may be required.
