About the position

The Program Coordinator III/Driver Education Program Specialist position with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is a vital role located in Wake County, NC, specifically within District 3. This position is responsible for training and certifying school bus drivers both in the classroom and behind the wheel, ensuring that they are well-versed in safe driving procedures. The role encompasses teaching defensive driving courses, conducting driver improvement clinics, and facilitating various safety programs aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of school bus drivers. In addition to instructional duties, the Program Coordinator will conduct vision and medical screenings for driver education classes, provide training and certification for commercial driver training instructors, and inspect commercial driver training schools and vehicles to ensure compliance with state and county laws. The position also involves investigating complaints related to commercial driver training schools, completing required weekly reports for submission to the central office, and maintaining all work-related reports and files. The program area for this position includes training and teaching, auditing, bus driving, and a working knowledge of DMV or Federal computer programs, as well as inspecting vehicles for compliance with CDL laws. This role requires a strong commitment to safety and compliance, as well as the ability to effectively communicate and instruct others. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the responsibilities associated with driver education and training, as well as the ability to analyze and evaluate information to make informed decisions. Responsibilities

  • Train and certify school bus drivers in the classroom and behind the wheel.
  • Teach safe driving procedures for school bus driver defensive driving courses and driver improvement clinics.
  • Conduct vision and medical screenings for driver education classes.
  • Provide training and certification for commercial driver training instructors.
  • Inspect commercial driver training schools and vehicles for compliance with state and county laws.
  • Investigate complaints involving commercial driver training schools.
  • Complete required weekly reports to be submitted to central office.
  • Compile and maintain all work-related reports and files.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of experience related to the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience providing instruction in a classroom setting.
  • Experience developing or revising lesson plans.
  • Experience completing and maintaining reports and/or files.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications.
  • Experience examining and evaluating information and making determinations based on analysis of this information.
  • Previously or currently possess a CDL B with P (passenger) & S (School Bus) endorsements for at least 2 years.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry equipment/supplies weighing approximately 50lbs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with DMV or Federal computer programs.
  • Knowledge of inspecting vehicles for CDL law compliance.
