About the position

The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Nurse Coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring excellence in patient care within the Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA). Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the Neuroscience Clinics, this position operates under limited supervision and is responsible for coordinating comprehensive nursing care for patients undergoing DBS procedures. The DBS Nurse Coordinator is tasked with managing pre and post-operative multidisciplinary appointments, handling patient calls, and developing individualized care plans in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. This role is pivotal in monitoring the progress of DBS patients during the perioperative period, ensuring that all aspects of their care are addressed effectively. In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, the DBS Nurse Coordinator serves as a liaison among various departments, including Movement Disorders, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Radiology, and Neurosurgery. This position also involves promoting the DBS program to referring physicians, facilitating expedited referrals, and providing educational resources to patients and their families. Establishing community partnerships to enhance educational programs for patients is another key aspect of this role, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive support throughout their treatment journey. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate comprehensive nursing care for DBS patients, including pre and post-operative multidisciplinary appointments.
  • Manage DBS patient calls and inquiries.
  • Develop individualized plans of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Monitor the progress of DBS patients during the perioperative period.
  • Act as a liaison between Movement Disorders, Neurology, Neuropsychology, Radiology, and Neurosurgery departments.
  • Promote the DBS program to referring physicians and provide expedited referrals.
  • Establish community partnerships to enhance educational patient programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of five years' work experience as a Registered Nurse in Pediatric Critical Care, Cardiac, and/or Surgery.
  • Experience in Performance Improvement (PI) programs and processes.
  • Ability to utilize data for program analysis.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to collaboratively work with all disciplines.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Word and Excel.
  • Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or compact state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an AHA recognized provider or equivalent.
  • Proof of current training in AED for healthcare providers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a generalist in a related specialty area by the American Nurses Association (ANA) is strongly encouraged.
