About the position

The Fund for Advancement of Minorities through Education (FAME) is a dedicated non-profit organization focused on enhancing the educational opportunities for students of color in the Greater Pittsburgh area. Established over 30 years ago, FAME provides need-based scholarships to talented African American students, enabling them to access high-quality independent school education. The FAME Scholar Program supports students from grades 3 through 12 with scholarships and additional enrichment resources, including tutoring, internships, and leadership development workshops. FAME is committed to empowering African American youth to become future leaders and community stewards, fostering a collaborative environment among educators who are passionate about educational equity. The Program Coordinator plays a crucial role in executing a variety of Scholar programs and providing essential support to FAME's core initiatives. This position serves as the primary contact for 11th and 12th-grade Scholars and their families, offering academic and college preparation counseling, as well as coordinating events and enrichment activities. The Program Coordinator will work closely with other FAME leaders and report directly to the Scholar Program Director. The role encompasses guidance and counseling, program planning and development, advocacy for Scholars, assessment analysis, and maintaining professionalism and ethical standards within the organization. In this position, the Program Coordinator will demonstrate the ability to help high school Scholars maximize their academic achievement and personal development. They will work collaboratively with students, parents, and educators to ensure that each Scholar receives the necessary support to thrive academically and socially. The Program Coordinator will also be responsible for planning and executing various enrichment programs, workshops, and events that align with FAME's mission to support the educational journey of African American students. This role requires a proactive approach to program development, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all Scholars.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic and college prep counseling to 11th and 12th-grade Scholars and their families.
  • Assist Scholars in maximizing their personal/social development and academic achievement.
  • Coordinate efforts among teachers, support teams, and specialized services for struggling students.
  • Facilitate meaningful discussions around career interests and college preparation with Scholars and families.
  • Plan and execute FAME Enrichment Programs in collaboration with the Scholar Program Director.
  • Maintain partnerships with internships and corporate organizations for student opportunities.
  • Coordinate various events such as SAT/ACT prep courses, tutoring sessions, and leadership symposiums.
  • Serve as an advocate for Scholars within the school and community, providing feedback to stakeholders.
  • Analyze assessments to identify Scholars' abilities and support their individual goal setting.
  • Uphold ethical standards and maintain confidentiality of Scholar information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, business administration, or a related field.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working with youth from underserved communities.
  • Prior experience in education or out-of-school time nonprofit organizations is preferred.
  • Professional experience in high school college counseling, education guidance, or youth mentorship.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with students, parents, and educators.
  • Knowledge of college-prep curriculum, scheduling, and program planning.
