About the position

The Program Director is responsible for overseeing the operations of a large program or center at the University of Houston, specifically focusing on law students. This role includes managing staff, budgets, and projects, while ensuring that all departmental goals are met. The director will engage in strategic planning, hire and direct staff activities, resolve personnel issues, and implement new programs and policies to enhance the academic support provided to law students.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operations of a large program or center at the university.
  • Manage staff, budgets, and projects within the department.
  • Engage in strategic planning to meet departmental goals.
  • Hire and direct the activities of staff members.
  • Resolve personnel issues as they arise.
  • Engage in budget-planning, grant oversight, and policy development.
  • Implement new programs and monitor ongoing activities of the department or center.
  • Review and improve department policies and processes.
  • Represent the department to internal and external constituents.
  • Maintain a regular schedule of student appointments and advising sessions.
  • Develop and present academic advising workshops and programs.
  • Manage student crises and emergencies in collaboration with faculty and staff.
  • Collaborate with other departments to develop programs for students.
  • Assist in dealing with students requiring special assistance.
  • Support student events hosted by the Office of Student Affairs.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (Juris Doctorate preferred) and bar licensure in any state.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience.
  • Thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of law and academic advising.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a law firm or legal position.
  • Experience in training, assisting, advising, supervising, and mentoring junior attorneys.
  • Experience in delivering law student and/or junior attorney trainings and presentations.
  • Experience in conducting outreach to law students and/or junior attorneys.
