About the position

The Program Financial Analyst role at Smiths Detection involves providing life-cycle accounting, analytical support, and finance partnering expertise to Program Managers. This includes managing the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), ensuring accurate cost maintenance in SAP, and timely budgeting and accounting of relevant costs. The analyst will forecast sales, inventory, gross margin, and cash, collaborating closely with various teams across Smiths sites and financial staff in the UK headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing analytical financial support to the Program Manager for financial preparation and program reviews.
  • Attend program kickoff meetings, set up programs in SAP, and generate WBS structures.
  • Create project cost accumulation methods based on contract implications.
  • Understand direct and indirect rate applications for multiple contract types and provide guidance to the program team.
  • Review all cost elements charged to assigned programs for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Analyze cost and rate applications to ensure proper accounting of projects.
  • Compare actual costs to bid/budget costs, highlight variances, and propose recovery suggestions.
  • Work with Make-To-Order (MTO) and Make-To-Stock (MTS) programs, understanding accounting treatments in SAP.
  • Document contract performance, monthly estimates to complete (ETC), and estimates at completion (EAC) projections with Program Managers.
  • Prepare invoices in accordance with government contracts and FAR requirements.
  • Monitor cumulative billings against contract values and highlight programs nearing contract ceilings.
  • Present financial results in monthly program management reviews.
  • Assist the Manager and Senior Program Finance Analyst with deliverables, training new hires, and establishing best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • 2-4 years of finance or related corporate experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems is required.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas and functions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
  • Analytical and self-motivated with a high level of attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • MBA or MBA candidate preferred.
  • Previous SAP experience is an asset.
  • Process improvement experience strongly preferred.
  • Earned Value Management System (EVMS) experience a plus.
