About the position

The Program Instructor position involves teaching adaptive sports and recreation lessons to individuals with disabilities under the supervision of the Program Manager. This role includes both individual and group instruction across various seasonal activities, requiring the instructor to adapt lessons and equipment to meet the needs of participants. The position is part-time and seasonal, with responsibilities that include planning lessons, assessing student progress, and maintaining safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs individuals with disabilities in various sports and activities during winter and summer seasons.
  • Performs student assessments and plans lessons according to adaptive sports and therapeutic recreation concepts.
  • Selects appropriate teaching systems and equipment, setting goals and planning lessons accordingly.
  • Documents student progress, maintains accurate records, and makes recommendations for future lessons.
  • Assists with the operation of weekly programs in Denver and Winter Park, including some overnight trips.
  • Attends all required training sessions and meets standards to pass training.
  • Assists with volunteer and special events organized by NSCD.
  • Maintains equipment and assists with repair and inventory.
  • Follows safety procedures and utilizes appropriate safety equipment.
  • Creates a friendly and helpful environment while interacting with guests and staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; college degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, Special Education, or related field is a plus.
  • Current CPR and Advanced First Aid certification required within a month of job offer.
  • Proficiency in alpine skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, or snowshoeing required for winter activities.
  • Ability to swim in moving water required for summer activities.
  • One year of experience in adaptive sports instruction preferred.
  • One year of experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency, especially with Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Current PSIA/AASI and AMGA certification preferred.
  • Ability to row stern frame boats and guide river paddle rafts preferred.
  • Proficiency in canoeing, paddle boarding, hiking, camping, and other outdoor recreation activities preferred.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and adaptive recreation and equipment is desirable.
