About the position

The New Jersey Department of Children and Families (DCF) is seeking a Data Specialist (Consultant) to assist in managing and analyzing data from programmatic databases. This role involves working closely with various divisions to understand analytic and reporting needs, creating efficient processes for data utilization, and overseeing improvements in data collection and reporting processes. The Data Specialist will also handle administrative tasks related to data collection and sharing.

Responsibilities

• Manage data systems & data collection efforts
• Draft, refine and maintain data collection tools, systems and databases
• Oversee use of data systems, becoming an expert in navigating and pulling data from data systems
• Check data for accuracy; develop and execute data cleaning and management protocols
• Maintain documentation of data collection activities including data files, data dictionaries and codebooks
• Meet weekly or biweekly with other data system stakeholders to collaborate around shared database and reporting needs
• Provide technical assistance and training to program and provider staff on data entry, report generation and use of data systems
• Collaborate and communicate around findings and needed improvements
• Partner with research and programmatic staff on data and evaluation projects
• Support the development and maintenance of interactive data dashboards, reports and visualizations using MS Excel and Tableau/Power BI
• Collaborate with stakeholder groups to interpret data and develop recommendations
• Assist with administrative tasks
• Send/share data with necessary stakeholders, both internal and external to DCF as well as to the federal government
• Manage distribution of online data collection tools

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited college or university in a discipline appropriate to the position
• Minimum of 3 years of experience managing and analyzing data
• Experience managing and analyzing data in Excel, Tableau and/or Power BI
• Experience creating data visualizations, dashboards, and analytical reports in Excel, Tableau/Power BI

Nice-to-haves

• Degree or coursework in data science preferred
• SQL & Python experience is a plus
